Neil L. Whitehead (19 March 1956 – 22 March 2012) was an English anthropologist, who is best known for his work on the anthropology of violence, dark shamanism (and Guyanese kanaimà in particular), post-human anthropology and the historical anthropology of South America and the Caribbean.
Neil L. Whitehead was best known for his explorations on the “dark side” of shamanism. Eschewing romantic depictions of benevolent shaman-healers, he drew connections between indigenous sorcery and sexualized tribal and political violence in the Guianas from colonial through modern times.
Anthropologist Neil Whitehead has extensively catalogued assault sorcery in northern Amazonia. Through his interviews with caretakers, victims and shamans he was able to describe in at times gruesome detail what the practice of assault sorcery is used for and what it entails. In Dark Shamans, Neil L. Whitehead argued that piya is one part of a three-part Patamuna shamanic complex and that the role of the piya is both an intermediary to the spirits and inherently ambiguous, for the piya can also be a kanaima and vice versa.
On the little-known and darker side of shamanism there exists an ancient form of sorcery called kanaimà, a practice still observed among the Amerindians of the highlands of Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil that involves the ritual stalking, mutilation, lingering death, and consumption of human victims.
